'Leon' Trailer

Originally I wanted to add a scene from 'The Birds' when the birds group around a school whilst the children are singing. I think this would have been great because it builds tension brilliantly and uses camera shots effectively, such as when the camera cuts to the childrens climbing frame outside the school, each time adding one or two birds until the female character follows a bird in the sky to land on the climbing frame, to where the climbing frame is full of birds. I thought that shot increased tension and added surprise very effectively.
The embedding code from youtube was not available however, so I instead added the trailer to a film I have been studying in class called 'Leon'. I feel that this is still a good example of a video to do with thrillers because of the choice of shots and action that is included into the trailer, with the purpose to get viewers hooked, but not give too much of the film away. The trailer to 'Leon' uses this idea well due to the choice of music and how there is enough action to build up to show it is a thriller and intense, but not give away the key parts of the film.

Ian - you need to show the research that you have done on thriller codes and conventions. Thanks. Mrs. Witting

Some excellent detail here Ian. Did you have any further notes on Psycho? I really liked your analysis of the way the camera revealed the EMOTIONS of the characters. You need to comment further on audience reading of character. Age, gender, clothes, voice, non-verbal diaglogue. What are our expectations of the thriller genre character? Are any of the characters you have looked at conventional? How do the characters react and relate to each other?

I think the aspect of character is particularly important in your own production. How does the opening suggest relationship between the two characters and how are you going to 'suggest' the narrative of the two characters? Does the audience 'read' them by referring to other texts?

Please post the treatment for your thriller opening. mw

Keanu Reeves' character is a conventional thriller character of the crime genre because his character is a stereotypical 'tough guy'. His character is strong, influential, powerful, big built (muscles) and dominant not just because he is linked to the law working for the police and having a weapon, but that his character takes control in most situations and succeeds 'just in time' (another typical crime thriller aspect). Also with most tough guys in the thriller genre there is a love interest which brings out the softer side in him, which exists for Keanu Reeves' character in 'Speed'. Also in a typical thriller manner, this woman is captured and he risks everything to win her back.
Keanu Reeves from 'Speed' and Tom Hanks from 'Saving Private Ryan', their characters relate to eachother in a way that they are both on the front line fighting for justice, and they are big and muscular men, whose characters are therefore powerful, dominant, take control in all situations and are successful in those situations (prevail against the threat).

Good on the strong protagonist. In your film the 'weaker' character - perhaps the victim being stalked is inside the house writing. Is he a conventional thriller 'victim'. What is his story? mw
